Where can I find these? Neither are sold in my local supermarkets (and there are 4 differnt ones within 5 mins of my house ;________; ). What kind of shops sell these and how can I search the names in Japanese?I live Tokyo (near Sshibuya) by the way. Thanks!
Department stores usually have a good range of fresh herbs but they won't be cheap. Local supermarkets mainly cater to the local housewives exotic herbs and strong flavours aren't two of the Japanese cuisines stand out points... Bulk meat is best from one of the import wholesalers of which I am sure someone will steer (that was a pun BTW) you in the right direction. I don't have the links.
Upscale supermarkets and those with a selection of imported foods usually carry fresh herbs. You might miss them though because they're usually packaged (of course) in small plastic pouches. Quantity is ridiculously small prices high and selection often lacking. What kind of bulk foods are you looking for?
Grow your own. My wife has all kinds of smelly greens growing like crazy on the balcony. If I can't kill them then you know they're hardy.

I used to do it basil thyme etc. However i read an article on this and it said because of air pollution in Tokyo and the small area of growth that herbs have in flower pots the concentration of poisons within the herbs can be quite high. Don't do it anymore.
Old Man thanks for that. I'll have to check it out. Do you have a link?
I don't. It was in a japanese newspaper about 2 years ago but the gist was that you shouldn't eat anything grown in your flowerpots hanging out on your veranda if you live in a big city (it used Tokyo as the main example) because of the concentration of toxins in the soil. Funnily enough about a year later a student gave a presentation on the same theme in one of my classes.

Fresh herbs of just about every variety where I live. Prices fluctuate according to season... しょうがないPeople around where I live even have the odd unused rosemary bush... I grow on the verandah but I don't live in Tokyo... As for toxicity who knows these days whether product of Japan even means that any more.. we all know about CHinese veges...
